WHO – Hazardous Gaming & Gaming Disorder

“Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video-gaming’), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: 1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.”

It has happened, WHO is looking at having gaming classified as a mental health disorder. What does this mean for gamers? A lot of things I can’t explain, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the government added a few extra percentage points in tax to our beloved video games. Even worse though it trivializes people with actual mental health problems, gamers chose to play – we chose this form of entertainment. People do not want schizophrenia, depression or anxiety. Games are a form of entertainment with very complex art and story behind them, they do not give a one-way kind of interaction but rather draw people in by allowing them to interact with a new world fully. Watching a Football game is a one-way interaction, some beefy dude who beat his wife is running with a ball, absolutely nothing to do with me if he scores. Whereas I am the reason, my character survived and continued to the next section of the story.

Can gaming be bad? Yes, of course, if you are addicted to gaming and are allowing the rest of your life to fall behind then it will be negative, but this is the same thing as being addicted to any form of entertainment. I am looking at you TV, real housewives of Georgia or Mob Wives or lord knows whatever else is on TV. Gaming addiction should fall under the addiction umbrella, not a disorder on its own.

I trashed Football and reality TV, and I am sorry your ratings will fall as a generation of gamers rise! Also, it should be noted I used the awful examples, not all Footballers beat women and not all TV sucks. GOT, Vikings as examples of shows I like and should be respected, Football as a participant sport is fun with many other benefits.
