I have been a gamer since my parents bought me a SNES from the local cash converters in our small housing commision neighborhood, we were poor by circumstance, having only arrived in Australia a year earlier. At this point, a small tear should trickle down your cheek as you emphasize with me, or if you don’t because you experienced the same thing.

Enjoying my Sunday gaming, having breakfast with my partner and doing all this joyful stuff while anxiously waiting for the 60 minutes broadcast about gaming addiction comes on. They got us, the gamers are gone – a bunch of people who have never gamed, never been a part of the culture is about to tell me whats what. There she is, a blonde middle-aged woman, she is well kept and has a good figure, climbs awkwardly into bed with a teenage boy – sure this sounds like the intro to a porno, but no my friends. This is someone commenting on things she has no knowledge on, no psychology degree and the last game she played was candy crush on her phone.

The report goes on, two chubby teenagers are paraded as what happens to your kids if they game, they are secluded, refuse to go to school and spend all day on Fortnite – firstly, you kids need a better game to be addicted to, seriously!. Let me make myself clear, these kids have issues, complicated issues I don’t actually have the knowledge to comment on, but this does not seem like kids who are addicted to gaming, and it has ruined they’re life. These two chubsters look like kids whose parents have given them a choice, go to school and learn Pythagoras’s theorem or stay at home, napping, beating meat and playing video games. Let’s just say if my parents had given me a choice to go to school or spend my day napping, beating meat and playing video games, I would undoubtedly choose to head into class and learn algebra.

This is a perfect example of over the top journalism that makes it sound as if gamers are all brain dead, stay at home, light-fearing degenerates who live in their parent’s basements. Well you know what 60 Minutes, this is the first time I have watched your show and that was only so I could have material for my blog, your relevance is none existent, much like a fact in the narrative, you tried to push. Lets look at it this way, what do games teach you? You always need to level up, some of the most ambitious individuals that I have the honor to call my friends are hardened gamers, raised by Pac Man, Mario, and Zelda. I do feel bad for the parents of these chubsters, but you know what? You are the parent, the decisions are yours and these kids are looking to you for guidance. Also, do not let middle-aged women into your teenager’s room with a camera – sounds creepy as shit.
