Hello, there fellow gamers, after seven years the last of us part II has come out, and what can I say? I am kind of lost for words at the perfection of the mechanics, the shooting is crisp and smooth, the action is intense, and it will stress you out – but that’s not what we will be talking about when it comes to this game. I will do the first three hours of this game talking mostly about the story, a dark story for a dark time.
The game is set five years from the events of the last game, Ellie and Joel have settled into life in Jackson where Joel’s brother lives, their relationship has also blossomed. I slid that in there, but that’s not the tone of the game; even the Joel Ellie relationship at the beginning of the game is terrible; they argued the night before. After that, the game gets very dark; the zombies are aggressive from the get-go, they are not as dumb as the ones from the previous game, and it tests your nerves.
This game is dark, I felt like I got punched in the gut, and then smacked across the head with a lead pipe – Watching Joel get butchered, hurt, what hurt more was that the producers managed to give Joel the emotion of a man who knew he deserved it to an extent. He wasn’t tough – he knew it was coming, like the rising of the sun, he knew someone would eventually come for revenge, as he lies there in a pool of blood and Ellie cries out, his face is bloody and detail of the gore shows a piece of Joel’s ear missing, this is to prepare you for the brutality coming.
The game gets tougher as we go, and its a far shift from the naughty dog games, the first iteration of this was tough, it had some moments to choke you up – but this is a new level, the enemies are brutal, the zombies are aggressive and smart. Even the facial expressions of the characters when you do something cruel is so expressive that its believable.
Play this game, but be warned – this is a new direction, and it is different from what you are used to and what you expect.
